Blue Hills Observatory is dedicated in Milton.
January 31, 1885
[2/1] Built by Abbott Lawrence Rotch, the private observatory is located on top of the Great Blue Hill. The oldest weather observatory in continuous operation in the U.S., it is the highest point on the East Coast from which the Atlantic Ocean is visible. It records its first climatological and meteorological observations on February 1, 1885. At his death in 1912, Rotch bequeaths the tower to Harvard University, which operates it until it is taken over by the National Weather Service in 1959.
